Your appointment
What to expect at your appointment
Earwax is normal and usually clears on its own, but a build-up can cause muffled hearing, fullness or discomfort. Here is how we help.
We check your ears firstA camera check confirms whether wax is the cause and that removal is safe for you.
Gentle microsuctionA small medical suction tube removes the wax. No water is used, and most people feel only a little noise.
Prepare with olive oilUse olive oil drops for 3 to 5 days before your visit to soften the wax. Avoid cotton buds.
Private and comfortableYour appointment takes place in our private consultation room and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

FAQs
Earwax removal questions
Quick answers from the team at Ridgway Pharmacy.
Does microsuction hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. You will hear a suction noise, and some people feel a slight tickle or pressure. We stop at any time if you are uncomfortable.
Do I need to use olive oil first?
Yes, please use olive oil drops for 3 to 5 days before your appointment. Softer wax is quicker and more comfortable to remove.
What if my ears do not need wax removal?
Book an ear check if you are unsure. If there is no wax build-up, we explain what we see and what to do next.
Can children have earwax removal?
Please contact the pharmacy before booking for a child, so we can confirm the service is suitable.
How long does the appointment take?
Usually 20 to 30 minutes, including the ear check before and after.
